GUIDE 05 / BETWEEN VISITS

Steady support.
Gentle movement.

Three supported positions for the front of the thigh: standing, side-lying and face-down.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Gentle tension,
never pain.

Warm up with easy movement. Choose one comfortable option rather than doing every stretch. Move slowly, breathe normally and do not bounce or force the range.

Stop for pain, tingling, numbness, dizziness or symptoms travelling into an arm or leg. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or return. With injury, recent surgery, pregnancy or a condition that affects exercise, get individualized advice first.

These are general educational options, not a personalized physical therapy program. Shorter holds and smaller movements are fine; your clinician’s instructions take priority.

THREE WAYS TO BEGIN

Find a position
that suits you.

Choose the position that keeps your knee, back and balance comfortable. None of these requires your heel to touch your buttock. Skip a version if reaching the ankle strains another area.

You may need: Wall or stable chair · mat or firm bed.

01 / MOVEMENT OPTION

Supported standing stretch.

15–20 seconds or less · release sooner whenever needed

Supported standing stretch demonstration

Set up.

Stand beside a wall or stable chair and keep one hand on it for balance.

Move slowly.

  1. Bend the opposite knee and hold the ankle only if it is easy to reach.
  2. Ease the heel toward your buttock while keeping the torso upright and the knees close, without forcing them together.
  3. Pause for 15–20 seconds or less. Slowly release the foot, then change sides.

What to notice.

Mild tension along the front of the thigh, not inside the knee.

Make it easier.

Use a smaller knee bend. Do not arch your back, pull harder or hop to find your balance. Try a lying option if standing is difficult.

02 / MOVEMENT OPTION

Side-lying thigh stretch.

Up to 20 seconds · release sooner whenever needed

Side-lying thigh stretch demonstration

Set up.

Lie on your side with your head supported. Keep the leg you want to stretch on top and your pelvis steady.

Move slowly.

  1. Bend the top knee, bringing the heel toward the buttock within an easy range.
  2. If comfortable, gently hold the foot or ankle to maintain the position. Do not pull the knee backward or roll your pelvis.
  3. Hold briefly, up to 20 seconds, then lower the foot with control. Turn over to change sides.

What to notice.

A light pull in the front of the top thigh, without knee pressure.

Make it easier.

Bend the lower leg for stability. Keep the heel farther away or skip the hold if the foot is hard to reach.

03 / MOVEMENT OPTION

Face-down thigh stretch.

A brief comfortable hold; ask about timing · release sooner whenever needed

Face-down thigh stretch demonstration

Set up.

Use this only if lying on your front is comfortable. Rest on a mat or firm bed with your head supported in a relaxed position.

Move slowly.

  1. Bend one knee and gently hold that ankle if you can reach without twisting.
  2. Ease the heel toward your buttock until the front thigh feels a mild stretch. Keep your pelvis resting and lower back comfortable.
  3. Pause briefly, then release and lower the foot slowly. Change sides if comfortable.

What to notice.

Gentle thigh tension, not a back arch, neck strain or knee pain.

Make it easier.

Keep the knee less bent. Choose side-lying instead if face-down positioning, reaching or breathing is uncomfortable; do not force the position.
